Noble offers the following tips for making a homemade basket:

  • You want your contents to be visible. Somebody should be able to view each individual item in the basket.
  • If you are preparing holiday  gift baskets, do several at once. Use small boxes that the gift items came in at the bottom of the basket and cover them with a cloth item to make items more visible. Put taller items in the back.
  • Use plates, hats and decorative boxes as the base. You can also make them by gluing fabric, scrapbooking paper and wallpaper to any box, vase, flowerpot or bucket.
  • Plan ahead for the holidays. Kids love to help with gift baskets. Have the kids help make large quantities of Chex mix, chocolate covered pretzels and cookies. Bake ahead or double the quantities and freeze items for future gift baskets.
  • Instead of purchasing the standard basket fillings, make your own out of used wrapping paper and bags. Fold the bags up as if making a fan so there are distinct lines in the paper. Make the folds horizontal and then run the folded paper vertically through a paper cutter.
  • Standard basket filling costs $1 per bag at the dollar store, she says. You can purchase dishcloths, cloth napkins or placemats for the same amount of money.
  • If you are making a basket with munchies, try using popcorn as a filling.
  • Use a ribbon when tying your basket. Items may shift while you transport them. This will allow you to open the basket easily to rearrange items when you arrive at your destination.

Step 1
The first step is to decide where you want to place the basket: on the front, attached to the handlebars (Step 2-3), or behind the bike seat (Step 3-4). After a baby is born, people often forget to buy gifts for the new mother. They just concentrate on items for the baby. You can easily create a gift basket for a new mother by filling it with useful items that she will greatly appreciate.

Choosing the Gifts and Basket

Buy foot-massaging slippers. She will be on her feet a lot in the immediate future.

Choose a nightgown or blouse with buttons down the front if she's breast-feeding.

Buy a T-shirt that has a positive message about motherhood. She will use it gladly as an occasional change from button-down blouses.

Buy an extra-large mug with a special message for mothers.

Give a small "Mom's Brag Book" photo album that she can carry in her handbag.

Cook her favorite meal at your home and put it in her freezer. In the gift basket, put a card that says, "Look in the freezer." A few days later, when the baby has been up all night, it will be a perfect gift.

Pick a basket style. Your choices include those with one handle, with two side handles or without handles. Make certain the basket is large enough to hold the gifts you have selected.

Decide on the color of the basket by choosing one that complements the mother's home decor. If in doubt, choose a neutral color by selecting a natural wicker basket.

Use shredded paper filling to make the gifts fit snugly in the basket.

Choose a mushy greeting card for a new mother. She will treasure it.

Packing the Basket

Wrap each present with a colorful gift wrap.

Put a layer of shredded paper filling on the bottom of the basket.

Place the wrapped gifts vertically or horizontally in the basket, as space allows, pushing the filling between gifts to ensure a very snug fit. Cover some of the gifts completely with the filling to create mini surprises when the basket is unpacked.

Place the basket in the center of a large piece of clear or tinted cellophane gift wrap. You may need two pieces of the wrap to completely cover a large basket.

Bring all sides of the wrap to a few inches above the top of the basket. Secure the wrap by tying it with a long, colorful ribbon.

Tape your greeting card onto the wrap.
